Coles is about the music, the community and the atmosphere. It does offer a rare glimpse of LA noir, but my friends and I go there for the music on (most) Wed. nights, when great bands play and `pass the hat`. Everyone I've brought to these acoutic concerts has discovered a new `favorite` band or singer. I do wish they they served dinner later, but if you ask, they can sometimes scare up a last sandwich or two. Ask the bartender for his `drink of the week` (hint: it's always something fruity, on the line of a mai-tai), or any favorite (drinks are very reasonable). I do agree that the area is questionable (it is skid row after all), so go with a friend, park nearby if you can, and walk purposefully in. Once in, its a comfortable place to be.
